Here are just a few of the eco-tip entries we've received so far.
"One of the eco tips that I feel best about right now is mulching my grass. I cringe on garbage day when I see bags and bags of grass clippings on the side of the road. With a mulching mower you don't have to bag your grass (yay), it doesn't go into landfills (double yay) and it helps build a healther lawn without pesticides or herbicides (triple yay!)" - Shawna Y.
"I try to live my life a little greener with the following tip. Do I need it or do I just want it…by trying to live a little simpler make decision making about ‘stuff’ a little easier." - Shelley A.
"My eco tip is using one marked glass a day for all my drinks, and rinsing it if I change drinks, instead of wasting 5-10 cups/glasses a day, and having to wash each one!" - Monika W.
Go on, send us your tip - big or small - we're all ears!

My eco tip is to plant a vegetable garden! We have done it for the first time this year, and not only has it turned out fantastic (even with my zero experience), but it's a great way to teach the kids about how food is grown - and they love to eat whatever we grow!
My tip is to teach your children not to be wasteful, to recycle and repurpose things. This will ensure you are doing things you should be to show them and these "habits" will continue on for generations.
We love taking our bamboo utensils everywhere we go so we never have to use plastic ones. Also, when we through parties, we ask guests to bring a set of dishes and a cup or mug so we don't have to by disposable ones. We also really love our reusable mesh produce bags that we take to the grocery store with us. Finally, my favourite way to be green,.. riding my bike everywhere!

Last christmas I hand-sewed everyone's gift wrapping out of my old pajama pants! I don't buy wrapping or gift bags, but I do love to reuse the wrapping from gifts that I have received. The christmas before, I wrapped my families gifts in photos of me from the newspaper. :)
My eco-tip is to use small hand towels instead of paper napkins. You can find them at the dollar store and they come in a zillion different colors.
They wash and wear beautifully, are the perfect size for laps and little ones can mop up with them easily.
Save a tree...use cloth napkins!
I make all my own cleaning supplies.4-5 cheap natural ingredients will clean your whole house. Do it like Grandma used to,vinegar, baking soda, borax, lemons ect... I make dishwasher and laundry detergent,multi-purpose cleaner, window cleaner, air freshener, mold killer, fabric softener and many more! My family of 6 isn't exposed to harmful chemicals and what goes into the water system is safe.
My eco tip is that I have prewrapped some gift boxes for Christmas giving. I wrapped the top and the bottom of high quality boxes with paper and use them to wrap gifts for adult family & friends. Then they use them the following year. Some of the boxes have been used 10 times back and forth. Saves time, money and is eco friendly too. If you wrap some of them in non traditional Christmas wrap (ie solids or stripes) then you can use them for birthdays too.
Say "No" to the toy. If you can avoid fast food all together, even better... grow your own, I agree! However, if the drive-thru beckons... say "No". We ALL know that these toys end up in the landfill. These food giants actually MAKE garbage. Believe me, your child will get used to not getting a toy. Give them a quarter to stick in their piggy bank, or a sticker for their sticker book. Cheers to the kids helping their planet!
lead by example and refuse to use stryofoam plates, forks etc. and get people talking about saving the environment instead of polluting it. suggest helping to wash the dishes if too tired to get out the dinnerware.
Do your part , leave it cleaner than you found it.
We have been using a reusable swim diaper everytime we go swimming with our 10 month old son, instead of the disposable ones that only get used once. We also make most of our sons baby food instead of buying the jar baby food. If we do end up using jar baby food, we save all the jars to be used in my classroom in an art project.
My biggest eco tip. Get a water filter system and drink out of something other then plastic bottles. I love my Sigg and Klean Kanteen bottles.
Our family tries to make our "take-away" meals as waste-free as possible. This includes my daughter's school lunches, picnics, etc. We use re-usable containers, not only for food and drink but also for carrying our meals. We also bring any compostable leftover materials home to be added to the compost here (or at school, my daughter knew to add it to the classroom composter.)
Our eco tip is plan ahead for eating and drinking out. My kids know that before we go anywhere they have to get their stainless water bottle and fill it up and we pack snacks and lunch stuff "just in case." Saves us driving around looking for a place to eat, prevents us from buying food on the go with wasteful packaging, and gets my children to think of using the items we have instead of always buying new or convenience buys (plastic water bottles, fast food, etc).
